For many of us in the North East, the frustration of waiting days—or even weeks—for a GP appointment is all too familiar. Whether you are in Esh Winning or over in Sunderland, getting fast access to healthcare is a priority when you're feeling under the weather.
The NHS Pharmacy First scheme has changed the way we access local healthcare. It empowers your local pharmacist to assess and treat seven common clinical conditions without you needing to see a doctor first. At Riverview Health Centre Pharmacy, we are proud to offer this service, providing professional care right on your doorstep.
Pharmacy First is an NHS initiative designed to make healthcare more accessible. Our pharmacists have undergone additional clinical training to provide advice and, where clinically appropriate, prescription-only medicines for specific ailments.
If you are suffering from any of the following, you can walk straight into our pharmacy in Esh Winning or Riverview:
Sinusitis: For adults and children aged 12 years and over suffering from sinus pain and congestion.
Sore Throat: For patients aged 5 years and over (see our specific blog on Strep A for more detail).
Acute Otitis Media (Earache): Specifically for children aged 1 to 17 years.
Infected Insect Bites: For patients aged 1 year and over.
Impetigo: A common skin infection, treatable for those aged 1 year and over.
Shingles: Professional support for adults aged 18 years and over.
Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): For women aged 16 to 64 years.
By visiting us first, you save time and help reduce the pressure on our local GP surgeries in Sunderland. Our private consultation rooms ensure your visit is discreet, and if our pharmacist determines that your condition requires a doctor’s intervention, we can refer you immediately.
"Pharmacy First isn't just about convenience; it's about clinical excellence. We can now provide the same treatments for these seven conditions that you would receive at a GP surgery, often in a fraction of the time. If you’re unsure if your symptoms fit, just pop in and ask—we’re here to help."
