Summer has officially arrived, and for many families across Wearside and County Durham, that means counting down the days until a well-deserved getaway abroad. Whether you are jetting off to an exotic beach in Southeast Asia, embarking on an adventurous trek through South America, or visiting extended family overseas, international travel is an incredible experience.
However, amidst the excitement of packing your swimwear and finding your passport, it is vital not to overlook your health. Many popular global destinations expose your body to infectious diseases that are not typically found here in the UK. At Riverview Health Centre, our dedicated travel health clinic in Sunderland and Esh Winning is fully equipped to keep you and your loved ones safe, healthy, and fully protected wherever your adventures take you.
When you travel outside of Western Europe or North America, your body can come into contact with pathogens that cause serious illnesses such as Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Hepatitis A, and Rabies. These diseases are often spread through contaminated local food and water supplies, or via the bites of insects like mosquitoes and ticks.
Travel vaccines work by safely stimulating your body’s immune system to produce antibodies, creating a protective shield against these specific infections. By getting vaccinated before you leave the North East, you completely eliminate the risk of spending your hard-earned holiday stuck inside a foreign hospital or returning home with a severe, long-term illness.
Many residents are surprised to learn that local GP surgeries no longer provide a comprehensive range of travel immunisations. Because routine travel health is increasingly classified as a private service, trying to book an appointment through your doctor can lead to long delays or dead ends.
Riverview Health Centre bridges this gap by acting as your local, one-stop travel health hub. Our specialist pharmacists have undergone extensive clinical training to evaluate your itinerary, administer your injections safely, and provide expert advice on malaria prevention tablets and insect bite avoidance. We stock a wide range of essential travel vaccines, making it easy to protect your entire family under one roof.
If there is one piece of advice every traveller should follow, it is to plan well in advance.
Many travel vaccines cannot provide instant immunity. Some immunisations require multiple doses spaced several weeks apart for your body to build up complete protection, while others take at least ten to fourteen days to become fully effective in your system. Ideally, you should schedule a consultation with our teams in Esh Winning or Sunderland six to eight weeks before your departure date. However, if you have booked a last-minute getaway, please still come in to see us—some protection is always significantly better than none at all, and we can advise on accelerated schedules where possible.
"When people think of travel health, they usually only think about the injections themselves. But during our consultations at Riverview Health Centre, we look at your trip holistically. We don't just vaccinate you; we advise you on how to avoid traveller’s diarrhoea, how to safely treat local drinking water, and which insect repellents actually work against malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Your health needs can vary massively depending on whether you are staying in a luxury resort or backpacking through rural villages. Let us take care of the clinical details so you can focus entirely on enjoying your summer holiday."

Medical Disclaimer: Travel vaccination requirements depend entirely on your destination, medical history, age, and existing health conditions. Not all travel vaccines are available on the NHS, and private fees apply for specialised immunisations. A full consultation with our pharmacist is required before any vaccines can be administered.
